Val Venosta

Hikers welcome!

The hiking area around Castelbello-Ciardes is sunny and varied. The municipality is situated between the Gruppo di Tessa Nature Park and the Stelvio National Park and therefore offers pure relaxation and incomparable nature.
During a hike „in the heart of Lower Val Venosta“ you will pass lonely farms on steep slopes and you can have a rest at one of the eight mountain huts (some of them are open and offer typical dishes). You can also conquer high peaks and enjoy marvellous mountain lakes.

Hiking suggestions

Senales-Ciardes irrigation channel path
The Senales-Ciardes irrigation channel path is one of the longest irrigation channel paths in South Tyrol thanks to its eleven kilometres and is still used for irrigation. This channel was built from 1505 to 1517 so that it has been used for nearly half a millennium!
The easy 3-hour path (no. 3) takes you from Neuratheis in Val Senales to Juval Castle and then to Ciardes. We suggest you to take the bus to reach your starting point in Neuratheis. You also have the possibility to start at the Himmelreich hotel and restaurant.Open the map
Latschander irrigation channel path
Start the hike above Kastelbell Castle. Take the irrigation channel path (no. 3) towards Laces. There you can walk back to Castelbello-Ciardes by taking the path along the Adige river or you can take the Val Venosta train and enjoy the short ride. This 5 km long path clearly shows the importance of agriculture in Val Venosta: the channel was carved into the rock in the Latschander ravine.Open the map
